MAGIC and BLACK MAGIC BROWNIES. 'nuff said. I'm in love.

I love the cosmic cakes!! The bread is phenomenal and always warm, the bagels are so, so good. There's always something new and tasty to try from the dessert case. Try the lemon cloud and there's a giant, orange brioche-like pasty that is to die for!

"Can I really try ANYTHING!" I exclaimed with glee. "Yes, you can try in-ee-thiing!" the cute little brunette behind the counter exlaimed with (almost) equal elation. Zingerman's this is why you will always hold a special place in my heart. Not just because everything you make has a dose of awesome, but because your service is second to none and your employees are delight-filled. Oh yeah if you want a recommendation go for the 24 Karat Cake; all win, no lose.

For my sister's graduation cake, we searched all over Ann Arbor in advance for something tasty, affordable yet beautifully decorated. The end result was a perfectly sized chocolate cake with cream filling with a big M on top. The cake was a huge hit and we were tempted to stop by and stock up on their bread, cakes and pastries. We heard fabulous things about their chocolate challah bread from the graduate. Service was friendly and I'd love to go back again.

I used to go here with my grandparents when it was the Bill Knapps way back when, but ever since this place opened it has been top notch all the way and another feather in Zingerman's cap. A few of us were reticent about the bakehouse when it opened (I still prefer the delicatessen original), but you don't have to force me to eat some ridiculously decadent mac'n'cheese. Everything is very well thought out and always delicious and with changes to the menu overtime it's become even more refined. Now it is one of the best restaurants in the area. This place simply doesn't disappoint when it comes fancy comfort food.

I don't part with money easily. It might be the Scottish roots, or the blue collar (sometimes no-collar) background. Regardless, I can spend $50 on bread here and feel like I got a bargain. We are talking quality here, people. This is where I stock up for special occasions. In the grand Zingerman's tradition, the staff is courteous almost to the unsettling, Disney-esque extreme. Don't ask for something as a joke, they'll want to give it to you.

This address is the hub of the ZIngerman's Empire, which includes the Deli, Bakehouse, Roadhouse, Creamery, and more. Today's New York Times Business Section includes detailed coverage of the Empire. They repeat all the self-promotional material from the owners -- and the owners are really masters of self promotion. They've put themselves on the map in many ways. Gotta hand it to them for that! The link: nytimes.com/2007/05/03/b…

Why do I think this is a lousy location for what is probably an institution --I mean, this is Zingerman's! It looks like it's in a warehouse area, near the airport and not a busy area at all. Maybe that's not so bad. Anyways all the amazing baked goods are here. Bring lots of cash because this stuff ($29 for a coffeecake) isn't cheap, but you will be thrilled with the tastes. I took some cookies and brownies for a function, and they were gobbled up quickly. Had a "raspberry beret" cupcake, this being cupcake month. You must try ZIngerman's.

Once again another Zingerman's that is A-1 in my book. They make wonderful cupcakes, breads, cookies and other goodies. Plus sell hard to find ingredients that you might not find in your local grocery store's baking isle. You can also get their coffee ground or whole bean. My husband and I went on a tour of the bakehouse.. It was very interesting getting to see just how they make some of the goodies. We even went to a weekend before we got married for couples soon to be married. Let me just say the wedding cakes they make not only taste great but are beautiful. Maybe I can get married again and have Zingerman's make my cake.

The staff was very friendly, and the bread was good. It is nice that you can sample everything. It is definitely overpriced, but I'm not from Michigan so it might not be a fair comparison. Maybe this is the only high-caliber bakery in the area? Either way, they have good products.

After doing the delicatessen, we decided to go here for dessert. Price- not bad. Very reasonable. Quantity- Pretty huge baked desserts. The gelato was a bit small, but it was still good Quality- Gelato was good. I try to find unique things so I had the irish soda bread gelato and the bostock. Bostock is like a round roll topped with almonds and with a light orange syrup. It is very fluffy inside. Atmosphere- Again, very cozy. Staff- wonderful. They take care of you and go out of their way to make sure you are happy. Go get some sweet...service

I've decided not to let the exorbitant baked good prices interfere with my rating, so I'm upgrading to five stars! Seriously, the food is always good, the employees are always friendly, the free samples of bread and cheese are always a delight, the ham and cheese croissant is always buttery and flaky with crispy baked cheese bits where the contents oozed out during baking...aaand I'm drooling. My longstanding favorites are still the ham & cheese croissant, grilled cheese with the works and tomato soup on Wednesdays, and the small loaves of pretzel bread that you can get for a buck.

i'm going to add a comment and a tip. First, some people who've written reviews here are not talking about the Bakehouse; some are talking about the Deli, which is downtown, and some are talking about the Roadhouse, which is on the far West Side. The Bakehouse, the Creamery, and the Coffee House are south of I-94 off State St. When you come in to the industrial park where they are located, follow the map from their website and look for the orange roof. That's where they are. Don't give up. You'll find them and be so glad.

This is a great place for lunch. I've had two of the most amazing soups there. The soups change each day of the week, so you should check their menu online to see what's offered when. A while back I had the West African Peanut soup, and it had a wonderful texture and flavor. I went back exactly one week later to have it again, but they'd changed their menu. I guess there's a seasonal aspect to it. Weeks later I tried their Five O'Clock Cheddar Ale soup, and was very impressed. If you like sharp cheddar, you'll enjoy this soup. I've never been serviced by the same staff member there, but they've all been incredibly friendly, helpful, and efficient.

DELICIOUS EXPERIENCE, no kidding! I cannot begin to tell how much I love this place. I die a thousand times everytime I bite into their desserts. Now I take a class there? OMG!!! They TEACH you the secrets or in other words the stuff you NEED to know when cooking. We make flour-less cake? FOOL ME!!! taste just like gourmet cake. This is exceptional experience one must have in lifetime. Check out schedule on website and pick class of your like. Enjoy

I don't live in Ann Arbor and this bakery is one reason I'm glad I don't. If I lived anywhere near this bakery, I would lose all control and end up with a Zingerman brownie in my mouth every day. These brownies rock. All it took was someone flying into DC with a Zingerman brownie in tow, that person handing the brownie to me, and then me eating it to make me totally addicted. Luscious, rich, delicious, creamy. All these words applied to that one little (or rather big) brownie. How do you people live in the same town as this bakery and survive? Thank God I haven't found anything in DC that measures up to the baked goods at this place. I'd be dead in the water.

I'm new in town and an avid donut fan. I decided to check out Zingerman's Bakehouse this past Sunday since that is the only day they sell donuts. The Bakehouse is tucked away from other businesses, so it was a quiet, uncrowded location with a nice little seating area outside for when the weather is nice. The woman who helped me was very friendly and provided me with a lot of recommendations when I asked. Despite their large selection of baked goods, they only have two donut flavors. I opted for their ricotta filled donut. The donut was amazing, but the price was pretty steep costing me more than two dollars for one donut. I plan on going back to explore their selection more, but if everything is as costly as the donut, it might be best to go only occasionally for a treat.

By now we all know Zingerman's isn't cheap, so commenting on prices is a waste. I do not find the Bakehouse to be incredibly expensive, anyway. The caraway rye bread is the only loaf like it I can find in Arbor Arbor -dark with real rye flour and flecked with a generous amount of caraway seeds - and as far as special bakes go, cranberry pecan is amazing toasted and served with a scoop of chicken salad. The cosmic cake - their take on a Ding Dong - is my favorite chocolate cake/chocolate dessert anywhere. Also, kudos for letting people try before they buy - always a confidence-builder.

I was all in favor of supporting the zingermans brand until trying the bake house. We got 10 different baked items ranging from a bialy to a cinnamon roll and none would I rank higher than a 5/10. I had been here years ago and remember it being better but not interested in coming back. Especially now that Ann Arbor and metro Detroit have many other good options. Disappointing to see them drop so much in quality.

Next door to Zingerman's Bakehouse is a training facility for bakers looking to improve their technique. There are classes for different interest levels: bread baking, pastries, cakes and other (random) items. Classes can take place over a few hours or as part of a BAKE!-action, over a week-end. Prices range from $100 to $500, the latter for the week-end long classes. I have loved French macarons, long before they became trendy, so this was the perfect course for me. Most of the students in the class attended with friends or family members. I wish I did as it would have made the class more fun. However, by the end of the afternoon, we were all friendly with each other because of the shared experience. The classes are small, a maximum of 12 students, seated around butcher-block tables with our recipes/instruction booklet and cooking tools. Our instructor, Nikki, clearly explained and then demonstrated the technique and then walked us through each step of the baking process. She explained the rationale and background behind each recommended step. The classroom included a large mirror tilted over the stove for better viewing and a 12-burner stove for practice. For this class, we created a flavorful lemon curd that won rave reviews of everyone who tasted the macarons I made, and learned how to make salted caramel and chocolate ganache fillings. We also baked two different types of macaron shells: lemon and chocolate-espresso. The class was well organized, with the mise en place already prepared and tools/equipment in place. Clearly, Nikki and team thought through every step. Nikki patiently interacted with each student multiple times to ensure that our technique (macaronage) was perfect. And by the time I made the chocolate-espresso shells, it was. The shells were uniform in shape, had feet, and were crisp but chewy, with no cracks. When filled, the lemon one had a sweet-tart citrus flavor while the flavor of the chocolate one was enhanced by the instant espresso powder. I took home 15 (each) of the lemon and chocolate-espresso, judiciously sharing them. It appears that Zingerman's was opened to accommodating for allergies as one of the students deviated from the course curriculum. I would recommend calling them, if this is an issue. I would also recommend this class to those interested in gaining better insight into Zingerman's wonderful bakery products.

If you still have a power option ARM mortgage just go ahead and skip this month's payment and blow it here on whatever. Mostly sourdough. Yes, buy a lot of that. Don't care for it, here you will. Go next door to the cheese shop to immediately eat yummy cheeses on your yummy bread. Proceed to carb nap in your car. If you feel like you took a wrong turn into an industrial complex you are on target.

This is where Zingermann's really shines. All of the desserts I've had from here are incredible and so are their coffees, teas, mochas, sodas, and lemonade. I don't think there was a single thing I've had here that I was disappointed with. The gelato and chocolates are also incredible. My favorite was the ginger gelato because it had some kick but was creamy and flavorful and made you want to go back for more. It satisfied my sweet tooth without giving me a toothache from the sweetness. This can also get pretty hectic as it is where all the seating from the delicatessen goes as well. Get there at odd hours and prep for a line. A little expensive, but totally worth it.

Zingerman's is a staple throughout Michigan and even the U.S. So it would be fitting to check out the actual bakehouse, creamery and coffee house where everything is made. After driving around in circles, I finally found where exactly this Plaza Drive is, and made my way from store to store. Did I buy all of what I ate below? Goodness no. Let's remember that Zingerman's isn't skimpy with their prices, but they also aren't skimpy with their customer service and FREE samples. Wanna try something? No problemo. The friendly staff will cut off a sizeable bite for you. Of course free samples means free guilt into making a purchase. My only gripe about this bakery is that they use corn syrup in their products. Yeah, not a fan. How do I know this? Because of the great nutritional information they provide on their website. Breads -Dinkelbrot (spelt flower, potato, Michigan honey, spice, sunflower seeds): it's full of grains and seedy flavor--very filling and hearty. Sweets -Bostock (buttery brioche, orange simple syrup & toasted almond frangipani): it's very light with a slight hint of orange. I found it to be very dry and not a fan of citrusy desserts, this was not my go-to. -Flodni (honey poppy seed, raisin walnut and cinnamon apple): Like a fig pastry with a wonderful poppy seed layer. It's flaky, yet moist and refreshing. Apple-taste? Hmmm, not so much. -Ester hazy Torta (layers of toasted walnut cake, walnut vanilla butter cream & fondant): ok woah. It's more like bread--a nut bread with bits of seeds and grains throughout and sweet frosting layered in between. In fact it's not very sweet except for the frosting and wonderful fondant. Great for those who enjoy a lighter and earthier dessert. FINAL VERDICT: The bakehouse has a great assortment of breads, pastries, cakes, torts, coffee cakes, Hungarian and Jewish delicacies and smiles to go around.

Great fresh breads and baked treats for sampling and sale here. Love coming in and seeing what their specialty breads are and watching them get made through the bakery window. Stopping in to get a snack to go with your coffee from the roasters down the block is the perfect way to start your day, any day.

Another beautiful part of the Zingerman's empire. Their breads are showstopping. Their sweets delectable. If you love joy and carbohydrates, you will enjoy the Bakehouse. Now, as with all Zingerman's shops, you can sample anything you like. This is how we got ourselves a loaf of onion rye bread and likely the caraway rye next time. But I need to tell you about something special we sampled. You can see a picture of it attached. It is called a langos. Langos (pronounced long-gohsh, the term for one singular or multiples) is a Hungarian street food Zingerman's only makes it on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Now, you may ask yourself, "Why Hungarian street food in a bake shop? That seems random." IT'S BECAUSE IT'S DELICIOUS. Seriously in my top ten food experiences in my life. MY LIFE. YES. Take a disc of fried dough, smear it with sour cream, top with ham, fresh dill, and grated gouda. Sprinkle liberally with paprika. Then put it in your face. I would have never known to expect such a wonderful taste from the combination of those ingredients if Zingerman's had not offered me a sample to try. I am now a believer. My understanding is that the ingredients can vary, much like pizza, but this is definitely a winning combo. To recap: Everything here is wonderful, the staff are always friendly, try a new food!

I didn't see a separate place so I will review it here - Zingerman's offers classes to teach you how to make some of their specialties. I enrolled in the Baguettes class and was very happy I did. The instructors were professional yet down to earth. The price is very reasonable for what you get. Not only do you go home with some knowledge about baking, but you actually get samples while baking there, and take home your creations with you. Doesn't matter if you're a complete rube or Rachel Ray, Bake! will be a great experience.

Pretty good stuff, not great, fully priced. You can see the stuff being made to distribute to Zingerman's Ann Arbor empire. Plenty of free parking and many related shops for other Ziingerman"s stuff like cakes and classes. Just make sure your credit limit is upped, you may max it out here quickly.

Z's is a full scale bakery operation that puts out quality product. I stopped in while staying in Ann Arbor - while the location is a bit obscure, they make up for it in delicious pastry options. Honestly, I would be shocked if you ordered a pastry you didn't like from here. While you're here, snag a bottle of Boetje's mustard...some of the most delicious mustard out there in my opinion. Enjoy this place for all that it has to offer. You could spend an entire lifetime trying all the delicious baked goods that will take you to a heavenly place right here in Ann Arbor, MI

Love this place. The baked goods, gelato, coffees.... Everything is great. A little disappointing they switch out the pastries so occasionally they are out of what I was hoping they would have. Wish I could remember the names of everything but I can't. Just know that whatever you get will be good. They have many cakes and pies which look delicious but I haven't tried them. As with all Zingermans establishments the staff is amazing and so helpful.

First time visiting Ann Arbor and of course had to check out Zingermans (both the bakehouse and delicatessen). Solid 4 stars. I bought a pack of their vanilla marshmallows and a loaf of their loomis bread (I couldn't resist after getting a free sample!). Both items did not disappoint. Marshmallows: large white soft and fluffy squares that taste like actual vanilla. Makes sense since they use vanilla bean paste and vanilla seeds along with vanilla extract. Loomis bread: I am a sucker for cheese breads. This was delicious and great that their roasted peppers are sourced locally and they use their own made cheese too! Ingredients were simple and I could just keep eating slices as is, no need for anything else but a good round in the toaster oven if you wanted. The staff were all very friendly and had smiles on their faces while serving customers. I would give 5 stars but the prices are a little on the high side. I understand that it's more expensive to use better ingredients but to some visitors a tiny cupcake for 3 bucks and 1.50 for 1 bagel would be a turn off. Also, their numbers system isn't the most efficient because i noticed many ppl take numbers but don't answer when their called and then you have a number 2 away and aren't sure if you should just jump up and say I'm ready. Overall, I would recommend checking them out if you're here to visit!

First timer at this amazing place. I honestly just discovered this gem. I won't write a lot since everything has been said already, I think the place it's worth the buzz. I would say it is slightly overpriced just because I've had amazingly tasting baked goods at better prices but then again, if those treats would be cheap, people would overeat and then give bad reviews as they start gaining pounds:)

Let's be honest zingermans is good but the sandwiches and bread aren't made of gold. It's not worth 15$ . You can go anywhere downtown and get a great sand which for 6$ or 7$ bucks why spend the extra money to say you got a sandwich from zingermans. It's maybe a once a year place to visit. . Completely overpriced .

The desserts were amazing! Just like the deli next door, you can sample anything and everything! All you have to do is ask! Prices for dessert were fairly reasonable, but board line too expensive. Everyone who works here is extremely helpful and product knowledge smart!!!

Dessert Heaven! Although that's completely accurate, they also have savory items and plenty of breads, rolls, and my favorite... pretzel sticks! I came after a stop at Coffee Co... They have a delectable selection of bars, cookies, pies, cakes, etc... They also have breads and rolls. I purchased two butter croissants which were light and flakey, but full of butter flavor. Yes, it's expensive, but it is SO GOOD!

I looked around after stepping into the bakehouse, and shortly after an employee asked if I had tried the key lime pie, and gave me a bit. It was delicious. The service is super great here and everything is tasty. The employees were very excited for us to try stuff, and also excited when they discovered we had been to all the other Zingerman's locations but one. See, if you do that in a day, you get a free t-shirt! They signed off on our paper for all the other places, then we just had one to go (which we went to, and got the t-shirt - awesome!). I bought brownies and my boyfriend got a chocolate chip sourdough loaf. Everything was delicious as expected. The brownies are especially wonderful. I wish I lived nearby so I could keep trying different special breads. Oh well, then I would go broke.

They made my cake for my wedding in 2006. It was amazing. Exactly what I wanted. BUT as a wedding professional myself, customer service is key. This company writes books on customer service. But it wasn't there. After creating my cake with one woman, she was fired or quit whatever, and I was assigned a new person who didnt know anything about my cake 3 weeks before my wedding. I had to go over the design all over again. Not what I wanted to do 3 weeks before. So, cake was 100% perfect, service not so much :(

Why? I guess that's my question... why would you pay this much money for bread? It's not magic bread... eating it doesn't allow you to fly or see through buildings. It's not the kind of bread Jesus took several loafs of and fed several thousand people... though admittedly, you might think it is when you get done paying for it... so why? The yuppies in Ann Arbor do tend to like this place, though. It's usually packed and somehow they get away with charging this much. For bread.

I just took a Bake! class at Zingerman's Bakehouse and it was the most amazing experience! Honestly, this class is not something I would have thought to do (much less pay for) but I work for another Zingerman's business and earned it as a perk. Oh. My. Word. If you love cooking shows, baking, eating baked goods and getting excited about food, you really ought to check this out. My class was all about Cream Puffs. There were 10 other students (the class was sold out). You work in this awesome, fully equipped kitchen space. The teacher demos all the techniques you'll use (there's giant mirror over his workspace, so you can watch from across the room - kinda like a sleazy motel, ooh la la!). So, it's sorta like being in the audience for your favorite cooking show. But then you get to make and bake the food yourself, too! What's really cool is that you leave feeling totally empowered to replicate the experience at home. The Bakehouse is all about using traditional baking methods. You don't need an industrial kitchen or a bunch of weird ingredients to make exquisite baked goods. You just need the method. I hear the pizza and bread classes are very cool, but I'm pretty thrilled about all the eclair ingredients sitting in my kitchen right now.

Eight grain bread, magical brownies, and inflated prices. Zingerman's Bakehouse (and the enterprise, in general) sum up about every conception you may have of Ann Arbor. From the ingredients, the process and the purchase, it's undeniable that great care is taken to make the best baked good that you'll eat. Taking a bite from the fresh, warm loaf of bread that you just bought epitomizes what the entire Zingerman's experience is all about. But is it worth ~$7 - 8? As far as I'm concerned, Great Harvest Bread Company offers baked goods of similar quality for slightly more reasonable prices. One caveat, not so magical brownies. But it's Ann Arbor, you can find those anywhere. . .

I can't believe I've never Yelped about this place before. if you don't include Taco Bell, this is the closest take-out place to my office, and I absolutely love it. While multiple reviews here seem offended by the prices, I find their lunch specials to be inexpensive and absolutely delicious. I've tried every single soup option they have here and I'm of the opinion that this place has the very best soup outside of the downtown area. The creamy broccoli, chicken & sausage gumbo, corn chowder, creamy tomato, and cheddar ale are all excellent, and the plethora of complimentary bread options that come with the soup are always revolving and never bad. As far as the price, you can get a half-pint for $2.50 and a full pint for $4.95, and that's one great deal. Their sandwiches, while not as inexpensive, are also quite good. The fresh mozzarella sandwich is my favorite; I'm no vegetarian but this is one crazy delicious sandwich. The breakfast sandwich (which is only available on Tuesday) is another great meal, but sadly this is a limited menu option. For the baked goods, I can only say one thing: bacon bread. They bake a bacon bread here on a semi-monthly basis that I absolutely love. It's a smoky farm bread that literally tastes like bacon. Oddly enough, I don't usually buy baked goods here, this is a lunch place to me, but bacon bread is my exception. Let's face the elephant in the room. Yes, I understand Zingermans isn't the cheapest place in town. That complaint doesn't hold a lot of water with me because it's not like you're forced to buy bread here. If bread is "just" bread to you, just go to Kroeger and guess what... problem solved! There are a lot of people who are anti-Zingerman's because they associated it with an Ann Arbor attitude that they don't like. I used to say all that same stuff, and then I got a job in South Ann Arbor and realized that this bakery is an oasis in one of the dumpiest areas for restaurants I've ever seen. The lunch specials are a great deal considering the quality of the food, and since that's my point of reference, consider me a convert to this place. I understand that I'm not terribly helpful when it comes to judging this place as a bakery. But as a lunch take out place, Zingerman's Bakery is unbeatable. I'd gladly eat here long before Taco Bell, McDonalds, Subway, or any of the other awful restaurants that surround my office, and the food is simply excellent.

Wow, I love this place. I'd heard of this place numerous times but never really wanted to venture to the maze of identical looking buildings known as airport blvd. Just so happens annarbor.com did an article on this place and not only did they print the address, but also posted a photo of the Bright Orange Roof this place has. Well that all I needed and after finding it, I find myself getting lunch from here 2 or 3 times a week. Do yourself a favor and find this place. First its fast, take a number when you are ready to be helped and someone will take care of you. They have a wonderful rosemary ham sandwich for 6 bucks. There are a number of other sandwiches which are premade every morning. They have specialty hot sandwiches on particular days. Here is a link to the lunch menu. zingermansbakehouse.com/… So I haven't really bought any expensive bread but i did have a very good brownie and the moroccan doughnut and both were very good. I'd say they were 2 or 3 bucks a piece. All in all I find this an excellent place to pick up some lunch on the way in to work or on break. I find the prices to be reasonable considering the ingredients used. I find the Zing deli to be a overpriced, but I think this place is an excellent value. A special thanks to my favorite reviewers Liz W. and Mariah C., once again you are spot on.

I can deal with the exorbitant prices at Zingerman's Roadhouse because there is nothing else like it in Ann Arbor. The Bakehouse prices, however, are just plain ridiculous. You can get a comparable, if not superior, chocolate croissant at Whole Foods for $1.99, so why would you pay $3.49 at the Bakehouse? Then there's the bread. Yeah, it's really good bread, but come on. I will continue to eat at the Roadhouse on a regular basis, as I have for years, but today was my last visit to the Bakehouse. I just can't do it anymore.

I ordered cookies and candy for my brother in law's birthday. 100$ and it wasn't good!! Bland and dry...he brought some over and I could not believe how I'd been ripped off. I've written to them asking for some hope. But I won't be a customer again. I have to come back to say that customer service has responded to my very happy satisfaction...Thank you!

Chocolate cherry bread (orgasm). I'm pretty sure they forgot to add the last word.

Zingerman's is all about bread. You can go to the deli and get sandwiches, but I'm actually not all that impressed by the sandwiches. I just get a loaf of bread and make sandwiches at home. The loaves are expensive, about $6 or so, but well worth the price. The bread is wonderfully crusty, and the crust is crispy and chewy, like all good breads ought to be. I'm actually digesting some right now. Whenever I'm invited to a holiday feast, I bring along some bread from Zingerman's to share.

Oh how I love Zingerman's Bakehouse. I'm so glad I don't work or live nearby. I'd be broke and morbidly obese. It never fails...every time I walk in, staff is eager to help with a great smile and attitude. I truly appreciate their consistent level of customer service. I love their bread. Cranberry walnut...ridiculously good. I wish they baked it year-round. I miss it. I dream about it. There is no shortage of cranberries & walnuts in each loaf. Pepper Bacon Farmhouse...omg...bacon. Need I say more? Pepper Parmesan...awesome, chunks of parmesan cheese throughout the loaf and great to make any sandwich, especially a BLT w/ avocado, my new favorite. Today, I stopped in for another loaf of Pepper Parmesan. So sad...none on the shelf. BUT WAIT!!!! It just came out of the oven. So warm and delicious. Apparently I had good timing because their special bake was done...the Loomis bread. She gave me a sample & of course I had to get a loaf! I also got a focaccia for my stepdad...hopefully it'll make it til Sunday. The only downside to buying bread fresh out of the oven is that they can't slice it. That means it won't last long at all, not that it ever has before! So, I basically spent $25 on bread. Ridiculous, yes. Absolutely amazing bread...totally worth it, occasionally! The only baked goods I've had are the rugallah (great!), and the brownies. Those brownies are evil. Pure evil. My husband has finished off a package of 4 without hesitation. It's horrifying.

I like everything here! A favorite destination. Delicious samples to nibble on all over the store. Z's creamery is next store, so get some locally-made goat cheese to go with your fabulous bread. That bread is the best in Ann Arbor, by a long shot. Pricey (like the entire Z empire) but so worth it. They do a bread-of-the-month which is pretty heavily discounted. Day-olds are also a deal. I buy a bunch and then freeze them in our chest freezer; they thaw beautifully in the oven. I get a warm, secure feeling from having a cache of sourdough in my basement. The pastries are fabulous, and they have very nice (& not expensive) ready-made sandwiches in the cooler. Wonderful iced and hot coffee. My 9-year-old son got his most recent birthday cake here: the hummingbird, a fabulous, moist variation on carrot cake that includes pineapple and coconut. Most sophisticated cake ever served at a Zap Zone birthday party, I am pretty sure. Married beautifully with the flavors of the Domino's pizza :-0

I'd give it 5 stars but I was disappointed in the selection that was available. Granted, we were there a little later in the day, but still, it was clear that their selection isn't huge. The product itself is excellent. Definitely worth the drive and the hype. The Bakery, Coffee house, and Creamery are all in a warehouse district and we initially thought the GPS had led us astray. Some better signage would be nice.

Their counter service is friendly and knowledgeable and I probably agree with what most people say about Z's, BUT, I cannot for the life of me figure out their bread. I've never been impressed, and their bagels are horrible. I got six free ones for my birthday and they were hard as rocks. When i bought some at Plum Mkt. the night before, the next morning again, hard as rocks - nothing could make them edible and I almost lost a filling. I wouldn't recommend their bagels.

Zingerman's Bakeshop is the key to a happy relationship! Well, OK, not the only one, but it certainly doesn't hurt! After years of working in downtown Ann Arbor, my fella's employer relocated to out near the Ann Arbor airport. This is a strange industrial-park area, parts of which house both Zingerman's Bakeshop and Zingerman's Mailorder (where I worked on holidays while an undergrad). This meant no more walking to work, no more stopping into Encore at lunch. The move was pretty disappointing for him. Enter Zingerman's Bakeshop! As soon as Jeremy (said fella) realized how close this wonderful little spot was to his new digs, he was excited. He had always been a little strangely anti-soup, but within a few months of working out there, the Bakehouse soups had won him over completely. At just $2.50 for a cup of soup AND a slice or two of Z-man's bread, this is a steal of a deal. And, these are Zingerman's-quality soups, so you're talking hearty and flavorful, not watery! Shortly after his conversion to the way of the soup-lunch, he started bringing home a cup of soup and bread for me to take to work for lunch the next day. This was not only thoughtful, but so dang tasty, that I would think of how sweet this guy was for getting me something so enjoyable on each lunch break! Yeah, I'd still love him if he didn't bring me the Poblano Corn Chowder, but it certainly doesn't hurt that he's kind enough to share!

I've never actually been to the bakehouse, but my old roommate's brother was (or is) the manager there, and she used to bring home some amazing goodies. My favorite is their cinnamon raisin bread, but their sourdough and their farm bread are super high on the list as well. Oh! And their After Dinner Mint stuffed cupcake is pretty much orgasmic. I just wish they were closer to campus. I would've probably been there every week.

A cute fun little bakery in Ann Arbor. We stopped in after lunch and found the cupcakes and treats to be delicious. The packaged cookies were delicious too. Stop in for a treat and you will not be disappointed.

We ordered our wedding cakes( the vanilla chiffon with raspberry preserves and lemon curd and the chocolate with walnut rum butter cream) from Zingermans. The overall experience was wonderful! During our initial visit, they gave us cake samples to take home and try, and there was absolutely no pressure to book with them. We were a little hesitant to even visit zingermans in the first place because we thought their prices would be astronomical, but they were actually pretty average in comparison to other bakeries in the area. The cake samples were so good that we had trouble deciding on a flavor! Luckily, we were able to stop in and get cake samples whenever we would like in order to narrow things down! Instead of saving the top layer of our cake, we actually froze a box of samples! The only complaint I have is that on the day of the chiffon cake was more like a pound cake, which wasn't bad in terms of taste, but we were expecting light and fluffy!

I work nearby! Awesome! Edit: I don't work next door anymore, but I still enjoy the bread of the month (discounted price makes the loaves affordable). I miss getting the soups for lunch, which they served with bread for a reasonable price.

Making our way first into the bakeshop we were greeted by a friendly young man who offered us samples of chocolate and vanilla hand-cut marshmallows while we browsed the store. With an innumerable selection of breads, cakes, cookies, and pies we were told we could sample anything we liked and in the duration of our visit browsing books, cookware, and baked goods I did indeed sample a smooth and luxurious olive oil cake, a crispy ginger snap, a "magic" brownie that tasted much like the cocoa coffee cake. In addition to the samples we watched a class through the glass window as they learned to kneed bread and I picked up a hummingbird cupcake to go while my aunt elected to purchase a pretzel roll and my mother picked up a spoon for portioning out cookie dough. Consuming the cupcake later in the day I will note that the flavor was very traditional - hefty notes of banana, pineapple, and raisin with a delightfully light cream cheese frosting.

The Bakehouse is a little hard to find, but is well worth the effort! When I'm buying a birthday cake, the only place I go is ZIngerman's. I've bought my partner's cake there the last 4 years and each year it has been ridiculously good. This years cake was a dense, rich, three layer chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting. It was decorated with balloons and streamers made out of fondant, and had his name written on the side. It is a bit pricey (this cake was $30), but once you take a bite you realize it was all worth it. Zingerman's Bakehouse is also very customer focused. Last year they were not ready with my cake when I arrived to pick it up, and I ended up waiting about an hour. Obviously, I was upset. They apologized up and down and when I left I had mostly forgiven them. But then, the following week I received a package from them in the mail with a check for half of the cost of the cake and a gift basket filled with their candy bars! A sincere apology AND money and chocolate? They won me over for sure! If you are looking for a great cake and are willing to spend a little extra, Zingerman's Bakehouse is the place to go.

Zingerman's Bakeshop is just off State Street between the off-ramp on I-94 and my corporate office, so I swing by every time I'm in town heading to an early morning meeting or leaving late in the day for the trek home to Chicago. I stop for the coffee and probably some cookies (chunky chocolate chip for my sweetie; ginger jump ups for me); and if I'm road tripping instead of flying I grab a tasty pie or cake or pastry and maybe a roll of fresh baked challah to sequester in the trunk. Always good, but pricey pricey pricey. Don't know that I would frequent the place if I were a local -- seems a lot of overhead may go into their marketing machine (which is brilliant). Just discovered that they have sandwiches in the case by the door which meant -- Zingerman's being the deli that pretends to be Jewish but is nowhere near kosher -- that I was able to grab a spread of Genoa Salami, some delicious ham and Applewood bacon on Farmer's Bread for the road home last night. Perfection.

A perk to living in Toledo is that the Zingerman's line is only 55 minutes away. That said, yours truly inside Zingerman's Bakeshop is much like a kid in a candy store. Every wall and every fridge case flaunted a different temptation -- and having chosen to ignore the prices, I nearly caved in to every single one of them. $8.99 for a loaf of bread may seem steep (and, admittedly, it is), but ZB is one of those few places that I wouldn't mind dropping at least $50 on bread alone. Whether it be the pecan raisin bread or the parmesan pepper bread, I can guarantee that each one will be delightful in its own ways. Some may be generic-sounding and quite possibly bland-looking, but ZB knows how to deliver effective breads. The pecuniary damage did not just stop there, however. The Cinn-oh-man beckoned and I earnestly responded -- in addition to the Buenos Aires brownies and the stuffed cupcakes. Of course, the candy bars were conveniently located next to the cash register, so I naturally gravitated towards those as well. What the Fudge it is! Might I also add that your waistline will be on the line when stopping by ZB.

Zingermans Bakeshop is not the easiet place to find. As a matter of fact it is down right difficult unless your in the know. Who thinks to look inside an industrial plaza for a bakery? Not to mention a cake shop and a Creamery. But all 3 sit right next to each other in the back 40 of a place that looks more like they make computer chip boards. First this is remember this is still Zingermans. This is not going to be one of the cheaper experiences in your life. But then again your getting nothing but high quality here. The brads are baked daily. The sourdough and the raisin breads are wow! They have a nice selection of rolls to choose from to The aseago is really great with a bowl of soup. They also have cakes, pies, pastries, Black Magic Brownies, yum! They have a small cooler there which you will find a few selections of there sandwiches, and soups. Try the Corn Chowder if they have some there. Bread loaf prices are between 4.95 and 6.95 and they will even slice it for you. Cakes and pies are around 24.95 for a whole. But remember your getting the best of the best. If you got some cash eating a whole in your wallet and have a hunger for something out of the norm, then head down. Youll be amazed when you find it, and even happier when you walk in

Zingerman's Bakehouse offers baking classes. If you love cooking, baking, eating baked goods and food, you may enjoy taking a class like I did on how to make Cream Puffs. With about 10 fellow students, we worked in the fully equipped kitchen, Alejandro, instuctor demonstrated with mirror above so you can learn the techniques. VERY fun date night, demostrated with video.

Believe it or not you can get a sandwich in here for around $6! (These are not the stacked high and wide deli-style sandwiches that you'll find at Z's Detroit Street location, but they make for an excellent grab if you need some lunch to put in your pocket and go. Great bread, great ingredients, in and out with a smile, once you find this tucked away spot. A lifesaver for anyone on this side of town looking for FRESH. and now Z's coffee roasting company is open several doors down, making up cups - Espresso drinks, pour-over drips, siphon, you name it.

Finding a Zingerman's within a mile of my house was detrimental for both my wallet and my waistline. This is an odd location for a store, as it's in an industrial park on the far side of 94 from most of the town, and not within walking distance to many homes or businesses. While their bread is definitely not cheap (ranging anywhere from $4 to $10 a loaf) it's by far the best I've ever had. Their parmesan pepper bread makes amazing garlic bread, and their chocolate cherry bread makes great french toast. My favorite is their peppered bacon farm bread, which they make several times a year. Keep an eye on the web site to see when their special breads come out, and you may be able to order them in advance. As an added bonus, the Zingerman's creamery is two doors down. Their gelato is great, and on special on Wednesday.

I first tried Zingerman's as a teenager. Everybody raved about it and I couldn't wait to try their food. Even then, the food disappointed me because everything was just a little off. They offer standard Jewish deli favorites like corned beef sandwiches, but the spices are not quite right. Of course, I tried their food several other times while a student at U of M, but it never hit the spot. They need to consult a Jewish grandmother.

A little bit pricey... but totally worth it. You totally have to go to the bakeshop and take their tour. Just to see the gigantic blocks of butter, and beaters bigger than your head! The breads there are awesome. They had this cracked pepper *bacon* bread... Amazingly enough - the bread tasted like a sandwich just by itself - so great!!!!! And their onion rye - so tasty... And they have this uper cool slicer to slice up your fresh loaves to go It's the coolest thing since, well, sliced bread... The shop people are totally sweet about cutting you samples of any of the breads or sweet goods. And there are always free samples. I always fly back to LA w/ a cooler full of bread :) If only I lived their I would totally take one of their baking classes!

It's too bad this place isn't easier to find--but it's great for those of us who know about it! Ample parking, lots of great bread choices. I used to gripe about the prices of some of their baked goods until I took one of their baking classes and priced the ingredients they use. It's not mark-up--it's the quality ingredients that they insist on. I may be the only person in the free world who doesn't like their brownies, but I haven't met a loaf of Zingerman's bread that I didn't like. I hate raisins in bread, but Zingerman's raisin bread? I could live on it. Worth the drive if you need some breadstuffs. And while you're here, the creamery is just a few doors down.

I agree that the prices are crazy high but I just don't think you find breads this good in many other places. I haven't found anything as good as Z's chocolate sourdough so I'm willing to fly it in when I need a fix!

  • Eve V.

It's the best deli in the world. Period. The breads are all amazing, huge array of olive oils and vinegars - meats and cheeses, and this butter from France that I swear must contain crack cocaine, because I could seriously eat an entire pound of this butter if it didn't cost $9 and my husband didn't find out. I usually drop $200 at the deli alone, but everything is so freaking good and so worth it. Around the holidays we send bread and other baked goods as gifts and everyone is always thrilled. The sandwiches are all great, breakfast is great, I just cannot rave enough about this place. It's like food Disney World for grownups.

Oh my god.......I love Zingerman's! The bakehouse is tucked into a warehouse building and right next to Zingerman's creamery, a few miles from downtown. You can buy an array of breads, pastries, sweets, and drinks here. They also give tours and have baking classes. True, the goodies are all a bit pricey, but always worth it! We love the rustic, farm loaf, the paesano breads, and a special treat is the chocolate cherry bread. The palmier cookies are flaky and delicious, and the brownies are heavenly! My favorite thing to get here is the sugar crisp muffin; the BEST MUFFIN I'VE EVER HAD! Sugary goodness in every bite! You can buy smore making sets here and they have delicious brewed coffees too! The earlier you get there the better! Go next door for an amazing variety of cheese or a delicious serving of fresh gelato!

I live about 260 miles from Ann Arbor but make fairly frequent visits. Zingermans Bakehouse is one of my mandatory stops. As near as I can tell, the whole Zingerman's operation cares sincerely about food and the customer and so I care about them. I have never, never got anything substandard from any of the Zingerman's businesses. There should be a sixth star.

Wonderful artisan breads full of flavor. They don't skimp on the crust. If bread is your thing, sign up for one of the Bake! classes that includes a tour of the Bakehouse, you won't be disappointed. Slinging dough into the enormous steam oven was an amazing experience for this amateur baker.

Since everyone else is so effusively, sickeningly sweet in their gushing over this place, I'm gonna go out of my way to come up with what's wrong with Zingerman's Bakehouse: 1) The staff are "you better take a # to get served" absolutists (I refuse to use the term "Nazis" in a food review ala the overused term "Soup Nazi"...). I get it during a busy lunch rush --- you better take a # to get your order in, well, order --- but come on people, I've come in here at odd hours, with no one in line in front of me...and been asked to "take a #" before walking up to the counter to pay for a SELF-SERVE coffee. Lay off the # game, Zings, and chill on that. 2) The Enuff Already Bagel can and will break a tooth. 3) I'd get a tiny cup of cream cheese for my bagel if they didn't charge the ungodly .75 cent for a thimble full size of it. Bigger portions on the cream cheese, please. 4) The salads and sandwiches in the carryout case are flavorless and unimaginativeand it would be nice if they had a decent side item or two. 5) The staff can be overly helpful and I don't always like to give them my name just because they asked it or tell them how my day is going.

  • Spring S.

The prices are way to high, if they were made using organic ingredients then I could understand the price being justifiable however the ingredients are non organic thus meaning full of GMO's which is not worth the price they charge for everything! When they use quality ingredients without GMO's then I would for sure give them a 5 star rating. I know for sure that they do not use high quality ingredients because I have been into the bakehouse where everything is made, which is something they pride themselves on... they need to start using "Quality" ingredients for me to buy again but I am more so disgusted that they price things so high without using organic at least.

Ordinarily, I'd not give any Zingerman's production very many stars just on the fact that they are way over priced. In the case of the Bakehouse, that is pretty much true as well. I was a bread baker back in the day and I don't think there are many places in the area that make bread this good. I'm very impressed with the quality of the breads that they make here. I make an exception probably two time a year and buy a loaf of bread at Z. B. It's still too pricey in my book (I know how much it costs to make a loaf of good bread) but I have to give them their due, it's quite tasty.

I feel like a fat kid (that is totally secure with his life choices) in a candy store every time we go here. EVERYTHING here is wonderful. These guys really know what they are doing. They even make breads that sound not so great (i give you pumpernickel raisin rye) that make you feel like an idiot for ever questioning their judgement. Go here, you will be glad you did.

There is only one thing not to love about ZIngerman's and that is their prices. I had the hardest time deciding what to get. It all looks amazing, but one thing is more expensive than the next. What to do, is a $4 cupcake worth it? No, I've had too many cupcakes already... How about a brownie, also over $4? Nope, can't do it. I sampled their bread, delicious... I sampled the hamataschen, not my thing... Still no idea what to get I got an oatmeal cookie, being in there that long I actually believed $2 a cookie was "cheap" It was a damn good cookie too. I finally settled on their $5 a piece candy bars and I got 3 different kinds thinking this would showcase what they are about. Well $15 for 3 tiny candy bars that didn't even blow my mind was extreamly dissapointing. The only one worth mentioning was the cashew one, a consistency and flavors I had never had like that before, the rest poor attempts at Snickers. The location also odd but I guess it IS the factory. The people there are very nice and should I win the lottery I will buy myself a $15 loaf of bread here (not even a pound mind you)

I can't write the most specific review right now, because the last time and only time I went was in November, so my memory is a bit vague. I got 2 cosmic cakes I believe, but what I remember most was the lady behind the counter. She was super nice, even giving me a free "good luck" cookie for my boyfriend, who at that moment was in his dental school interview at UM. I'll go back to check it out for sure! My cousin has been raving about their baking classes for sometime, so I'd love to check that out :)

I can't say anything that hasn't been already said. The ingredients are QUALITY. The baked good are fantastic. The service is always very personal. Prices are reflective of all three items. You can ask for a hot loaf, fresh from the oven. Smells like bread angels are baking in there.

COME ON! This is a carb-lovers paradise!! From bread, to cake, strudel, world famous coffeecake, brownies and much more, it doesn't get any better than the Bakehouse within the Zingerman's Community of Businesses. Well, maybe the Zingerman's Coffee Company a few doors down, but that's only because I'm a coffee nerd and they roast extraordinary java. The bakery is laid-back, friendly and for the most part ALWAYS busy. Recently I ordered a custom birthday cake for my best friends 40th birthday bash designed like a Victoria's Secret bag. All I can tell you is that is was outstandingly gorgeous and incredibly delicious. At $200, it wasn't cheap but worth every dollar when illuminated with candles! What a showstopper. If you've never tried the Chile Cheddar bread, do it, TODAY. Have them slice it, hurry home and make a grilled cheese with it. OHMYGOD! Secretively hoard the rest for yourself. It's that good.

Today I had my first taste of Jewish seeded rye bread in close to 30 years. I, very anxiously, awaited my wife to prepare the loaf we received yesterday in accordance with the detailed instructions received with my order. I asked her to prepare a slice with butter and also a slice as is, so that I might tasted the fullness and quality of the unimpaired bread itself. The result was extremely disappointing, the bread was first dry almost to the point of stale and quite tough. I refer not to the firmness of the crust, which I long remember, but to the consistency of the bread itself. I had bought a variety of Zingerman's breads in order to sample the various flavors available, I sincerely hope the disappointment with my first loaf will not follow with the others. It is really ironic and sad the Panera Bread should know better how to bake Jewish rye Larry@bigkidstoy@aol.com

I've never seen so many delicious samples at once! I couldn't help myself from slurping up every free item I saw. The Pecan Pie was INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE. I wish I had had that for Thanksgiving. Also, the staff is incredibly nice. I tried a Blondie which was great. In addition, I enjoyed the Burnt Sugar Muffin. The Lemon Cloud was awesome--like a very light donut/croissant. The cosmic cake was fairly disappointing. This place rocks!!!

The graham crackers I had was ginger and they were pretty good. The winner was the brownie. The best ever I've had! It was slighty crusty on the outside, soft and oh-so-ever-slightly spongy on the inside. Most other brownies I've had are too dense and has a mud like consistency but this one had the fine balance of veering towards the cake side without actually doing so. Absolutely amazing brownies!

There are so many reviews for the Deli and Roadhouse but to me this is the best Zingerman's establishment. I gave a 3 star review of the Deli. In comparison, everything that I noted was lacking in the Deli is taken care of in the Bakehouse. The Bakehouse has a completely different vibe to it (for me) than the Deli. It's easy to navigate, very comfortable to walk around in and check out different areas, it is spacious to sit and grab a cup of coffee or gather a larger group for dessert. While the crowd at the deli seems to have a snobbish feel to it at times, the crowd at the bakehouse is much more laid back. People are doing work, chatting with friends, and loved ones and no one is pushy. In fact it's quite the opposite. We've had many nice conversations with other customers and even have formed a few new friendships here. They have really nice cakes and cookies and drinks too. It's pricey but it seems much more of a value than the deli. When it's busy it's still a bit crowded but one a quieter afternoon it's a fun place to sit and bring a date or just to have a few moments to yourself. The staff here has mostly been friendly too and on multiple occasions has been exceptional in helping me choose what to get. There are a lot of nice places for dessert in Ann Arbor. I like everything about this one. I'll go back to check out some of the others and will update my post if needed.

Just like everything else Zingerman's related, the Bakehouse is pure deliciousness. The Bakehouse itself has a wide selection of breads, treats, and kitchen gadgets, and I pretty much wanted to buy them all. They are also super-generous with samples--I was offered an entire slice of chocolate challah...yum! Next door to the Bakehouse, they offer baking (and some cooking) classes at their commercial baking facility. Classes are limited to 12 people, and you're seated around a large butcher block table with the instructor at the front of the room. My mom and I took the "Bakin' with Bacon" class and were very impressed (but not surprised) by the high level of service. You get a folder full of class materials (including all the recipes for everything you make in class) and all the mise en place has been done before you arrive (oh, if only this could be how baking and cooking were done at home!). Alejandro, our instructor, was patient, engaging, and informative. He went step-by-step through how to make each item and then he (and a few helpers) walked around to supervise while we tried it ourselves. Everything was timed perfectly, including starting bread that needed to rise first, then working on other items while the bread was rising, etc. The best part is that at the end of the night, you get to sample all of what Alejandro made, so you can take home all of your items (boxed neatly by the staff members) still intact. I brought home 2 loaves of bread, several dozen cookies, and a dozen savory scones. My friends and co-workers were quite pleased with this development :-). While we didn't make them ourselves, Alejandro also showed us how to make maple-glazed apple & bacon donuts, which might be one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted. A four-hour class is around $100, which might seem a little pricey, until you consider the quality of the instruction and the amount of food you get to take home with you at the end of the class (and they'll even tell you how to refrigerate/freeze items since you'll probably have so much you won't be able to eat it all at once!).

Hummingbird cake of the month. 20% off. $3 for a Palmier seems outrageous for the ingredients but they are oh so good. If you don't mind paying for quality, then this is the place to go. Location is a little difficult to find at first but once you do find it, you will remember and find it easily next time. Creamery, and Bakehouse are next door to each other.

Can I just say that I love the Zingerman's empire? Yes, every single one of the stores is a treat, but this is probably my favorite. It's a carb lover's dream come true! And today was even more awesome because of their fabulous birthday deal - a free loaf of bread. It was so hard to decide (and with only 2 people in the house I wouldn't dare get more than one loaf lest any of this deliciousness go to waste). In the end I decided on the onion rye. For some reason the words patty melt keep coming to mind. We also had soup and a sandwich and although not nearly as gourmet as from the deli, the sandwiches were good (and about 1/3 of the price). Some people may complain about their prices (as my mother says, there ain't no loaf of bread worth that much). Sorry mom, you are wrong....as the saying goes, you get what you pay for!

This review is specific to the Baguette baking class I recently attended at the Bakehouse. Their commercial baking facility is housed next door to the where they sell all their freshly baked items. From what I could see it looked as though they had two different classes running simultaneously in two separate classrooms. The room we were in was set up for 10 people and equipped with large butcher block tables and stools to work from, and a mirror over the instructors table so you could see exactly what was happening. Ingredients and class materials were all set on the shelf beneath the table tops each marked with personalized name tags. Once we got underway (right on time) our instructor, Alejandro and sidekick Kyle, ran us through all the course materials and familiarized all of us with the utensils we'd be using. This was my first baking/cooking class anywhere and it set the bar very very high! Alejandro was a very patient, informative and warm instructor that answered any questions we had as we moved through the the evening. That said, he would have covered all of our questions by the end of the class had we asked them or not - it was all presented that well, and I don't think he could've been more thorough in his instruction. By the end of the class we had each made a Poolish starter, a baguette dough ball and four baked baguettes all to take home and share. Towards the tail end of the class we did a brief tasting of a few local area baguette samples in comparison to what we had made that evening. The contrast was astonishing. This program is world class. I asked Alejandro how many classes he teaches and I'm pretty sure he said that they have 80 total classes and he teaches each of them. That's impressive to say the least and what's more impressive is the number of classes they have that are unique unto themselves. So you wanna take a class about Jewish cookies, great, I think it's called "The who's who of Jewish cookies". Or perhaps the perfect cream puffs elude you, they've got a class for that too. From pies to cookies, breads to bacon (yes they even have a class for using bacon in baking) this has got to be the very best place to start. It seemed as though a lot of my classmates were there as a gift and while it may not be your comfort zone any of these classes would make a kick ass present for anyone who enjoys eating and more so for the aspiring home gourmet. I will most certainly be back for some of their other classes. The 4 hour program was $100 which may seem a bit steep but I had to see what it was all about - the money was assuredly well spent!!

Have been here a number of times while traveling for business. Excellent coffee, great desserts and breakfast items, and the staff couldn't be nicer. Still trying to get down to the Deli but the Bakehouse has definitely proven to be an excellent bakery that I love coming back to.

This place is unexpectedly tucked away in an industrial area, drive towards the orange topped building, and you're going the right way. It's pretty unassuming, but once you walk in, you'll be welcomed by displays of pies, pastries (savory and sweet), bagels, coffee, cupcakes and bundt cakes. I opted for a bag of apricot rugelach, a hummingbird cupcake (which had chunks of pineapple in it!), and a potato bacon pastry. All of it was pretty good, but what I will be special requesting my boyfriend get when he's in town is the rugelach. It was so so good... it had a delicious crispy crust of sugary goodness, instead of the big granules I've had at every other place I've tried it... and the apricot spread inside was delicious. I need more and I'm not even finished with the bag... Parking: Plenty outside They take Visa, Mastercard & Cash

Mr. MVP and I thoroughly enjoyed this branch of Zingerman's. The staff was ultra friendly and helpful and the selection was fantastic. We ended up having lunch - chicken salad sandwich and a ham, bacon and salami concoction - as well as organic milk, chips, and two huge loaves of bread to go. The prices were very fair. We spent just about $30 which is reasonable in our opinions. As a bonus, our cupcake (which was amazing) was free because we were new customers! Family friendly, scratch made and a good selection means we will be back.

Similar to my review of the creamery I felt like the staff was extra friendly and helpful and the bread was amazing. There was a little section of desserts, I felt like for a "Bakehouse" the selection should have been broader and presented in a manner to make you want to buy. I understand the business model is more about baking different things each day and not committing a menu but I wanted to be amazed by "cheesecakes" or a long line of unique home baked goods. Very clean and a great place to visit!

Greedy but good. Why should a loaf of their Challah sell at Busch's (a local grocery store) for $4.99 but they sell the same thing in the Bakehouse for $6.99? Shouldn't it cost less in their own store, since they don't even have to transport it??? Answer: Because that's what they can charge. Greedy. Their prices really have exploded over the last 10 years. However, in fairness, the quality of their stuff is great. I can't recall ever having anything I didn't like.

Oh dear god I love this place. Actually, I love all the zingerman's ventures. This is how a flourishing set of businesses should operate. They all run like a well oiled machine. This place is busy. Like a line out the door busy. Super friendly staff... Never a bad experience in my 8 years in Michigan and I went often. The bakehouse has a special place with me for many reasons, 1) chocolate chip challah bread. 2) chocolate chip, nut, cherry bread..it's amazing toasted. 3) magic brownies. 4) chocolate sour creme coffee cake. Get a cold pressed coffee or a cold toddy. So so so so so good. This place is very pricey. I can drop 25 bucks on lunch. LUNCH. For a sandwich, Blenheim ginger ale, & a brownie. Worth every single cent.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh boy. Chocolate challah bread. You are not cheap but you are a delicious, delicious splurge. Can you even imagine making french toast with this stuff? I can! And I'm gonna do it. OHMNOMNOMNOM. Also got a birthday cake from there this weekend and it was fantastic. White chocolate covered with vanilla bean cream and raspberry preserves. So moist, dense, and not TOO sweet (well, save for the white chocolate curls on the outside). Really loved it. I bought it on a whim so I didn't have it custom made but the lovely lady behind the counter decorated it for me anyway. She added a bright circle of fondant, writing "happy birthday, ladies!" on it (it was a cake for my aunt and I who have birthdays in the same week) and a beautiful gum paste flower. Such a lovely touch that turned a rather plain looking cake into something special! And it didn't cost any extra which was nice since the cake already wasn't so cheap to begin with! ;) Yep, still love this place. Great food, awesome staff, and so much passion for their products. It's infectious!

As with other Zing's offerings this place is not for anyone cheap or on a tight budget. That being said I think the goods are generally top notch and tasty. For my birthday this week I took a swing by here for the 6 free bagels they offer on your birthday. As I cannot handle that many carbs I shared them with family. We had salt, sesame, raisin, whole grain, garlic and onion. The salt and sesame as always were my faves of the bunch. Loved the creamy and delicate cream cheese I bought to go with too. I have had some great cakes in here, always moist and not too overwhelmingly sweet. I am not a fan of overly sugared myself. I have also sampled a to die for (after fifteen seconds in a microwave) chocolate chess pie. The other baked goods are tasty too. The soups in here are generally what I come in for. I like the mushroom, tomato, mulligatawny, butternut squash and sausage and tortellini a lot. The hunks of bread that accompany them are always good too. Recently I tried one of their new pasties and was duly impressed. Breads are great and there is always something interesting to be had to boot. Pick whatever you like and you are sure to enjoy it. I am partial to the sesame semolina, the farm bread, the sweet wheat and the 8 grain 3 seed. The chili cheddar or chocolate cherry are great treats when I am in the mood. Go try the sfenj, only on fridays. Moroccan donuts with crunchy sugar outside and just a hint of salt inside (a non sweetened dough). Mmmmm deliciously different, lovely with a cup of tea. Spendy? Yes. Worth it? Yes.

Their breads are doughy, their sweets are sweet, and the bagels are... whatever bagels are supposed to be. I've tried probably around 75% of their products and have yet to find anything I didn't like.

The place is a little hard to find. But as soon as you turn down the street you see almost a block of this bakery and its production. When you walk into zingermans it's very home like you don't even notice the workers in the background making bread and cakes. I was greeting by SAM who took care of my large order of sweets. He was patient and cheerful. 150 dollars later I walked out knowing when I'm in the Ann Arbor area again I will definitely come back. Ohh and the cakes pies and bread is definitely worth the price.. Love it love it!!!!

As a longtime devotee of the Deli, I considered it my duty to make a long delayed pilgrimage to the Zingerman's Southside affiliates. Stop one of three was the Bakeshop at the Bakehouse. Currently, I live in a metro area in which it is difficult to count on crusty bread, and visits to bakery after bakery go unrewarded. It's a quest fulfilled to step into ZB, and see racks and bins full of crusty loaves. I came away with three delicious varieties: a Detroit Street Round (sourdough, capped with a crown of fennel, poppy and sesame seeds - WOW!), a Jewish Rye, and a Pecan Raisin (smaller, but with a half-pound of nuts and fruit!). Some people imagine alternative lives as a celebrity or pro athlete. But in my dreams tonight, I'm a superhero saving citizens from bread boredom with my stone hearth, steam-injected oven.

Definitely, this is a great place to browse or to buy a loaf of delicious bread. My latest favorite... the home made candy bars. They are fantastic, rich, full o flavor. A little on the high price side for what I usually get, but they are buy 2 get 1 free for January. As usual, the loaf of bread that we purchased is second to none. It has a wonderful thick, tasty crust and a soft inside that really likes to be covered with lots of fresh creamery butter. Top notch.

Amazing! Eat everything, drink everything. Coffee is superb, dairy from Calder's, coffee drinks are also GREAT (lattes, custom drinks, etc). The staff is super friendly and they all know what they are doing! Prices are a bit higher but for the gain in quality it's more than worth it.

I had a cake made here and it looked truly amazing. They made a design based on what I requested and went above and beyond. But the taste was 1,000 times better than the look. And it was so moist, it lasted 2 weeks and was delicious for every single bite. I love you, Zingermans Bakehouse.

Zingerman's Bakehouse is an excellent bakery with great breakfast and lunch options. Here you will find great pretzel sticks, breads of all kinds (I love the sesame semolina), brownies to die for, bagels with the outstanding cream cheese from the creamery next door, and the BEST key lime pie I have ever had. Today I got the excellent cheddar ale soup with a spinach strudel. It made for a very good lunch. (I ate it outside...no doubt amusing the table of business ladies next to me as I fought the wind throughout my meal.) Location is key here too. Being next to the Creamery and so close to the Coffee company makes the Bakehouse an even more attractive place to visit. I give the Bakehouse a strong recommendation. ...but before I go...I also have to mention that this is the home of a first rate sandwich: Vlad's Voracious Veggie. This sandwich is on my list of top five sandwiches I've ever eaten. Check it out.

Every time I have been here I have been satisfied with my sandwich. Everything is made with high quality ingredients. There are so many sandwich options with different meats and ingredients that you may have trouble choosing a sandwich!

So I've now been here three times, each of which was a fairly unique experience. The most notable consistency across these visits has been the graciousness, competence and helpfulness of the staff. Awesome people. The first time I went I bought two carrot cakes for a birthday party, since they were 20% off that month. Very good cakes, and the lady working the counter managed to decorate a second cake (quite beautifully) in about five minutes on request. I also got a slice of Hunk-a-Burnin' Love (chocolate cake) and it was SO GOOD. It was also not as horrendously expensive as the cake slices down at the deli, although I do think they are smaller. My second visit was for a tour, which I highly recommend (although it seemed way expensive to me, but hey, if you can get somebody else to pay for it like I did, go for it), and the samples at the end were divine. The bread is clearly very high quality, and their coffee cake is to die for. My third visit I only had an "Obama bun" (their product names are great), which is essentially a sticky bun, and it was unfortunately dry and not that flavorful. I came in the middle of the day, so I imagine it had been sitting around for several hours, but I was still disappointed. The whole enterprise seems like less of a ripoff than the deli (although maybe I'm just delusional), and I definitely recommend that all non-vegans try the chocolate cake before they die. AMAZING.

I don't know, I guess I'm just not a huge bakery fan. The bread was good, but it was a little crazy in there and the prices were more than I'd usually pay. Seeing so many positive reviews makes me wonder if I should give this Ann Arbor institution another try....

I've been to Zingerman's Bakehouse twice last year and then once again this year earlier this week. I never got around to reviewing them, so this encompasses overall after a year has past and revisiting. The first couple times I went was on outings where I would beg and drag my husband to get me a coffee while we were browsing the Treasure Mart. I really love my espresso and am a diehard fan of Ugly Mug's. That being said, if I need my fix I won't say no to the chains such as Starbucks if that is all there is nearby. I found Zingerman's coffee to be just okay. I wasn't wowed by it and the taste didn't leave me ravenous and longing for it when I awoke the next morning. Enough that when I returned THIS year, I hesitated looking at the options of what I could order. I instead chose their cold brew with vanilla added to it, which is pre-bottled in an barrel full of ice with color coded tops. I also got an everything bagel with cream cheese (the hangover food of champions). The cold brew was wonderful. Amazing. I only wish my roiling stomach would have let me drink it faster. The bagel was not as impressive for me. I do enjoy Barry's Bagels as they are the main supplier for all the coffee shops in downtown Ypsi. I know Zingerman's bagels have a (good) reputation for being on the 'crunchier' side - however it came off to me as stale and a little lacking in taste. The cream cheese was wonderful and made up for what the bagel lacked. The service there was also chipper and prompt - which made my leary, post-drinking composure brighten a bit as I made my way out into the world at 9 AM. Zingerman's prices are still high, but I knew that walking in and am not taking a star away from something I willingly (and knowingly) paid for. I would go back for the cold brew, but under my budget, I would probably hesitate if a more affordable option was presented!
